Alberto Contador held a light workout with his teammates of Tinkoff-Saxo during the first rest day of the Giro d’Italia 2015. After more less than an hour of biking, the nine riders of the team returned to the hotel for lunch, but Alberto delayed food to meet the scheduled time and attend to the media, as he was delayed a few minutes after also being testing his position in the time trial bike. On this matter was the first question.
-This morning you has also tested the time trial bike, did you want to adjust something?
-I’ve taken advantage of today to try my position on the bike, and although within five days I should be better, still I decided to change the position and opening a little the handlebar, mortgaging some aerodynamics to force a little less my shoulder. In this case I think it’s more important to protect it.
-Have you changed only by the shoulder or because the last part is uphill?
-No, just to protect the shoulder. This is absolutely an aerodinamic time trial. On training we get an average speed of 40 km/h and the climb is very soft.
-How is your condition right now, are you satisfied with your overall position?
-I’m happy because I’ve been getting better every day after the fall. Yesterday I had a cadence much closer to normal than in Campitello Matese. As for my situation in the general clasification, I am also happy. I’m ahead of my rivals and are they who have to move, although it is true that the Giro has only just begun.
-Aru asked your collaboration yesterday and then he did the sprint, how do you analyze this situation?
-It was something than more or less I expected. In the last kilometer I could have stayed on the wheel to keep forces and not lose anything, but as I said yesterday, I hope this Giro will be not win or lose by a second.
-You began the Giro with the idea of getting the double and the first week you fall. Came to your mind all of this when you crashed?
-Yes, I thought about that just at the moment of the crash. I’ve never broken a collarbone, then a touch my shoulder and instinctively I put it again in its place. Then I thought of all the sacrifices I had made, that I had mortgaged the beginning of the season for the double … but never crossed
my mind to go home. As I later told to a friend, if I have to go home now, I need a psychologist.
-After your crash, was only the shoulder problem which has limited you or your legs also said to you it was better not to force?
-After the fall I have been more conservative than attacking, both yesterday and in Campitello Matese. Passing these stages without lose time was good for me, because there is still more than enough terrain ahead. In this case I preferred to be conservative.
-How starts the idea of the double, do you want to enter history after having already won the big three?
-For me it’s just an extra motivation. If successful, that it’s really hard, I might be remembered, but I do it only because of the difficulty, by a sports motivation.
-In your career, once you’ve got the leader’s jersey, you’ve never lost. Have you thought about where and when you could lose it here?
-I don’t want to think about that possibility (laughs).
-But there is any weakness, where it could happen?
-The Jersey can be lost at all stages, as we saw the other day, but we have to see what happens in the time trial, Because Richie Porte is very strong there. Maybe this year will not continue that tradition, but there is a lot of land for recovering. In any case, those are just statistics.
-To overcome the shoulder problem has not given you even more motivation and desire to win?
-No, because it’s almost impossible to have more motivation. I worked hard for this, I have prepared not only physically, but mentally … we’ll see if I can do it.
-Who looks better of your opponents after the first week, do you think that Aru has already spent much forces and may pay it?
-Main rivals remains Aru and Porte. Richie has some advantage at the time trial, but we have to see how the standings are after that stage. As to Aru, it is true he has spent forces, but we all have done the same, his land is high mountains, like mine, so for me the two are dangerous.
-This first week has been very tough, with a lot of stress. Now, however, it seems to come a few days of transition before the time trial, are you worried about any stage until then?
-Even though there hasn’t been very tough finals, the first week was very demanding, the pack has suffered and now it seems that is a period of relax, but we must remain vigilant every day and above all save strenght for the time trial.
Are you worried about losing the jersey before the time trial?
No. We though already on the possibility of transferring it to Niemec, but when we went down the rhythm a little, Astana went to work and nothing happened. The real goal is to get in Milan, until there the jersey may change much of owner.
